IUPUI – Science and Engineering Laboratory

The 71,400 sf multidisciplinary laboratory building achieved LEED Silver Certification and is located directly south of the existing Science Building along Blackford Street. The Science and Engineering Laboratory Building (SELB) building provides new teaching laboratories, research laboratories and a vivarium.

The SELB building was strategically located on the site to minimize existing utility disruption and relocation; to maintain an opening between buildings for pedestrian access from the parking lots into the main campus; to align with the setbacks of the existing Science Building facing both Blackford Street and the quadrangle; and to allow an enclosed bridge connection between the existing Science Building and the new Science Engineering Laboratory Building.

The sustainable sitework design elements that helped the project achieve LEED Silver certification included pedestrian connections to bus routes and amenities, bike racks and changing facilities, rain gardens to promote infiltration, native landscaping, and efficient site lighting and reduced parking. New utility services to the building included storm, sanitary, water, chilled water, electric, gas, telecommunications, and steam. IDEM and city of Indianapolis permits were also required.
